How to choose a website and app development company in India

How to choose a website and app development company in IndiaBlog cover · 16:9

Choose a website and app development company by first matching the type of provider to your project, then scoring a shortlist on relevant live work, discovery process, technical quality, content and search skills, team continuity and contract terms. The best partners put code, accounts and intellectual property in your name, quote against a written scope and tell you what not to build. Price should be the final tie-breaker, not the first filter.

Key takeaways

  • Pick the provider type first: freelancer, offshore dev shop, design studio, full-service digital agency or product engineering firm each suit different projects.
  • Test live work yourself on a phone and in PageSpeed Insights; portfolios of screenshots prove little.
  • Score finalists on a weighted scorecard so the decision rests on evidence, not on the best presentation.
  • Your contract must assign IP and source code to you in writing, keep every account in your name, and tie payments to approved milestones.
  • Most red flags show up before signing: no discovery, a price before scope, vague ownership terms and pressure to pay everything upfront.

What types of website and app development companies are there?

There are five main types of provider, and choosing the right type matters more than choosing between two firms of the same type.

Provider typeBest forWatch out for
FreelancerSmall sites, landing pages, theme-based stores, well-defined fixesOne person’s availability; you supply strategy, content and project management
Offshore dev shopClearly specified development work billed by the hour or by the developerBuilds what you specify, not what you need; design, content and product thinking are often thin
Design studioBrand, portfolio and marketing sites where visual quality leadsEngineering depth, integrations and post-launch support vary
Full-service digital agencyWebsites, stores and apps tied to brand, content, SEO and marketingCheck that development is in-house, not passed to a subcontractor
Product engineering firmComplex web apps, SaaS platforms, enterprise systems, large teamsHigher cost and process overhead for a marketing website

Many firms are hybrids, so ask who will actually design, write, build and support your project, and whether they are employees. A business that needs a website, a Shopify store and an app connected to its marketing gets most from a full-service team; a funded startup building a complex platform may need a product engineering firm; a clearly scoped landing page is often best value from a strong freelancer.

What do the best development companies do differently?

The best development companies spend more time understanding the business before they quote, and more time on quality after the build is “done”.

  • They run discovery before pricing. They ask about your customers, the action the site or app must drive, who will maintain it and what it must integrate with.
  • They push back. They tell you which features to cut from version one and explain trade-offs between platforms such as Shopify, WordPress, Next.js, Flutter or React Native (see our platform comparison).
  • They write, not just code. Content structure and answer-first copy are part of the plan, because a beautiful site with weak words does not convert or get quoted by AI search; that is where SEO, AEO and GEO starts.
  • They show designs for mobile first and get approval before development starts.
  • They work on staging, with version control in Git, and you can see progress weekly.
  • They test properly: real Android and iOS devices, Core Web Vitals, accessibility, forms, payments and tracking.
  • They set accounts up in your name and hand over documentation, credentials and code at launch.
  • They measure after launch, connecting GA4, Search Console and lead or sales tracking so you can judge the result.

How do you run the selection process, step by step?

A good selection process takes three to five weeks and moves from a long list to one partner through a shared brief, written proposals and a short paid discovery where the project is large.

  1. Write a one-page brief: the business, the audience, the job of the site or app, must-have features and integrations, who will maintain it, a budget range and a deadline. Our website cost guide includes a brief template.
  2. Build a long list of six to eight from referrals, work you admire (check the footer or ask the owner who built it) and search, choosing the provider type first.
  3. Cut to three on evidence: live work, relevant sector or complexity, and how well they respond to the brief in an introductory call.
  4. Ask the three for written proposals against the same brief, including scope, team, timeline, milestones, exclusions and their standard contract.
  5. Score proposals on the scorecard below and call references.
  6. For larger projects, buy a paid discovery of one to three weeks from the front-runner: workshops, sitemap or user flows, a technical plan and a firm quote. It costs a fraction of the build, and you own the output even if you do not continue.
  7. Negotiate the contract, then the price. Ownership, accounts and exit terms first; a lower fee is worth little if those are weak.

How should you score development companies? A weighted scorecard

Score each finalist out of 100 using weighted criteria, ideally with two people from your side scoring independently before comparing.

CriterionWeightWhat good looks likeHow to check
Relevant live work20Comparable sites or apps live today, in your sector or of similar complexityOpen them on your phone; run PageSpeed Insights; download the app
Discovery and process15Structured discovery, written scope, sitemap or user flows before designAsk for a sample scope document and project plan
Technical quality15Fast, accessible, secure builds on mainstream frameworksAsk what stack and why; ask about testing and code reviews
Content, SEO and AEO10Copywriting, structured data and search set-up includedView page source on their work; look for schema and real headings
Team and continuity10Named in-house people who stay on the projectMeet the designer and lead developer, not just sales
Ownership and contract10IP assignment, source code, accounts in your name, clear exit termsRead their standard contract before negotiating price
Communication10Clear weekly updates, one accountable contact, quick written answersNotice how they handle the proposal stage
Support after launch5Warranty period, care plan, defined response timesAsk for the SLA in writing
Price and value5Itemised, matches the scope, no unexplained extrasCompare line by line, not by total

Call two references for each finalist and ask what went wrong and how it was handled; every project has problems, and the answer tells you more than the praise. Adjust weights to your project: an app with payments should weight technical quality higher, a brand site should weight design and content higher.

What questions should you ask before hiring a development company?

Ask questions that reveal how a company works, not just what it has made.

About the work

  • Which live projects are most like ours, and what was your exact role in each?
  • What would you recommend we leave out of version one, and why?
  • Which platform or framework would you choose here, and what would make you choose differently?

About the team and process

  • Who will design, write, build and test our project, and are they employees or subcontractors?
  • How often will we see progress, and on what: a staging link, a test build, a demo call?
  • How do you handle change requests and how are they priced?
  • How do you test speed, accessibility, payments and tracking before launch?

About ownership and after launch

  • Will the domain, hosting, repositories, app-store and analytics accounts be in our name from day one?
  • Will we receive the full source code and documentation, and when?
  • What does the warranty cover and for how long, and what does support cost after it ends?
  • If we part ways, what exactly do we receive and how quickly?

What must a website or app development contract include?

A sound development contract fixes the scope, transfers ownership to you in writing, keeps every account in your name, ties payments to approved milestones and defines support after launch. Take legal advice for your situation; these are the clauses to look for.

  • Scope and acceptance criteria. Pages, features, platforms and devices, with how “done” will be tested and accepted.
  • Intellectual property. Under India’s Copyright Act, 1957, an outside contractor is generally the first owner of the work it creates, and an assignment must be in writing; if the assignment does not state its duration or territory, the Act can limit it to five years and to India. So the contract should assign all rights in designs, code and content to you, worldwide and permanently, on payment.
  • Source code. Code is pushed to a Git repository (GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket) owned by your organisation throughout the project, not handed over at the end.
  • Accounts in your name. Domain registrar, DNS or Cloudflare, hosting, Shopify, Apple Developer and Google Play Console, Firebase, GA4, Meta Business, payment gateway and WhatsApp Business API accounts are owned by you, with the provider added as a user.
  • Third-party components. A list of licensed themes, plugins, fonts and libraries, and who holds each licence.
  • Milestone payments. A common structure is 25–40% on signing, a payment on design approval, a payment on staging or test-build approval, and the balance on launch and handover.
  • Change control. How changes are requested, estimated and approved in writing before work starts.
  • Warranty. A defect-fix period after launch, often 30–90 days, at no extra cost.
  • Support SLA. Response and fix times by severity, as below.
  • Confidentiality and data protection. Obligations under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act and, for overseas users, GDPR or Canadian privacy law.
  • Exit and handover. What you receive on termination, within how many days, and how disputes are resolved.
SeverityExampleTypical responseTypical fix or workaround
CriticalSite or app down, checkout or payments failingWithin 1–4 hoursWithin 24 hours
MajorKey feature broken, forms not sendingWithin 1 business dayWithin 2–3 business days
MinorLayout glitch, typo, small enhancementWithin 2–3 business daysNext scheduled release

These SLA figures are common starting points for negotiation, not a standard; tighter terms cost more.

What are the red flags when hiring a development company?

The clearest red flags appear before you sign, in how a company sells.

  • A fixed price before any discussion of scope, content or integrations.
  • Demands for 100% payment upfront, or most of it before design approval.
  • Reluctance to put the domain, hosting or app-store accounts in your name.
  • Vague answers on source code (“we provide the website, not the code”).
  • A portfolio of screenshots with no live links, or live sites that are slow and broken on mobile.
  • Claims of guaranteed first-page Google rankings or “#1” status.
  • No questions about your customers or business goals.
  • The person selling disappears once the contract is signed, and nobody can tell you who will do the work.
  • Everything is “easy” and nothing is a trade-off.
  • No staging site, no Git repository and no written change process.
  • Recommending a client-side-only app for a marketing site that needs to be found in search.
  • Pushing an app before the website or store works; read does your ecommerce brand need an app? first.

Should you hire an Indian development company from Canada or abroad?

Hiring an Indian development company from Canada, the UK, the Middle East or elsewhere works well when you choose for communication and process, not only for rates.

  • Time zones. India is 9.5 to 10.5 hours ahead of Toronto depending on daylight saving, so agree a daily overlap window (Indian evening, Canadian morning) and written updates that do not need a meeting.
  • Contracts and payments. Use a contract that names the governing law and dispute process, and invoice in USD or CAD where possible. Indian providers usually zero-rate exported services under a Letter of Undertaking, so Indian GST is generally not added; check your own country’s tax rules.
  • Local context. Make sure the team understands your market: Canadian bilingual content, local payment methods and privacy expectations.
  • Same essentials. Written scope, milestone payments, code and accounts in your name.

For example, gaa-tha’s team in India handled strategy, campaigns, Instagram, product scraping and the website for New Rave, a Canadian trading-card retailer.

Where does gaa-tha fit, and when should you choose someone else?

gaa-tha is a full-service digital agency founded in 2024 in Gujarat, with one in-house team covering brand, content, websites, Shopify, apps, AI and marketing. Our track record so far is 20+ websites built and 15+ client brands served, in India and abroad.

We are a good fit for: corporate, manufacturer and B2B websites (website development); portfolio and brand sites (portfolio and brand website design); Shopify stores (Shopify development); iOS and Android apps in Flutter or React Native (mobile app development and app design and development); SaaS MVPs (SaaS product development); and the systems behind them (custom software development). Our difference is that the people building your site or app also understand the brand, the content and the marketing that will send it traffic.

Choose someone else if: you need a very large engineering bench, round-the-clock operations support or specific procurement certifications (a product engineering firm fits better), or you need a simple template site on a minimal budget (a good freelancer is better value). Whoever you hire, use the scorecard above. For budgets, read website development cost in India and mobile app development cost in India.

Frequently asked questions

There is no single best company; the best one is the provider whose type, experience and process fit your project. Shortlist by provider type, then score finalists on live work, process, technical quality, ownership terms and support. Be wary of any company that calls itself number one without evidence.

Hire a freelancer for a small, clearly defined site where you can supply content and manage the project yourself. Hire an agency when you need strategy, design, copy, development and support from one accountable team, or when the site or app is central to your sales.

You should, but only if the contract says so. In India the creator of commissioned work is generally the first copyright owner, so insist on a written assignment of all rights to you, and on the code living in a repository your organisation owns.

Milestone payments tied to approvals are fairest for both sides: an advance on signing, then payments on design approval, on staging or test-build approval, and on launch. Avoid paying everything upfront, and keep the final payment for handover of code and accounts.

Corporate and brand websites typically take two to five weeks and larger sites six to eight. An app MVP usually takes eight to fourteen weeks and a SaaS MVP ten to sixteen, depending on features, integrations and how quickly decisions are made.

First secure access: confirm you own the domain, hosting, repositories and app-store accounts, and get the latest code and documentation. Then have the new provider audit the code before quoting, because taking over an unfinished project often reveals rework.
