# Custom website vs WordPress vs Shopify vs Webflow: which to use?

> Choose Shopify if your website’s main job is selling products, WordPress if a non-technical team publishes content every week, Webflow if designers want to build and edit a polished marketing site without developers, and a custom-coded site (for example Next.js with a headless CMS) when speed, unusual features, integrations or AI-search visibility matter most. The right choice depends less on the platform than on what the site must do and who will maintain it after launch.

## Key takeaways

- Shopify is the default for selling products online; it is a poor fit for a B2B site whose real job is generating enquiries.
- WordPress has the friendliest editor and the largest plugin library, but updates, security and speed become your ongoing responsibility.
- Webflow suits design-led marketing and startup sites edited by a small team; you rent the platform and pay by plan.
- Custom-coded sites (Next.js, Astro or static builds) are the fastest and the easiest to make fully readable by AI search, but need a developer for structural changes.
- Compare three-year cost of ownership, not the build fee, and decide by asking who will edit the site weekly and who will fix it in month six.

## What are custom-coded, WordPress, Shopify and Webflow websites?

All four can produce a fast, good-looking website; they differ in who hosts it, who can change it, and what it costs to keep running.

### Custom-coded website

A custom-coded website is written by developers in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, usually with a framework such as Next.js or Astro, and hosted on platforms like Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare or Firebase. It loads only what each page needs and can do anything. Content is edited in structured data files or through a headless CMS such as Sanity, Strapi, Contentful, Storyblok or Payload. The gaa-tha site you are reading is a custom static build: content lives in structured files and every page is generated as finished HTML.

### WordPress

WordPress is an open-source content management system you install on your own hosting (WordPress.org) or use as a hosted service (WordPress.com). Its strengths are a block editor most marketing teams pick up quickly and a vast library of plugins for forms, SEO, languages, memberships and WooCommerce stores. Its weakness is the same library: every plugin is code someone must keep updated.

### Shopify

Shopify is a hosted ecommerce platform: you pay a monthly subscription and Shopify runs the servers, security, checkout and admin. Themes are built in Liquid, apps add features, and Indian stores connect gateways such as Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree or CCAvenue and one-click checkouts such as GoKwik, Shiprocket Checkout or Razorpay Magic Checkout. It is built to sell products; content pages and blogs work, but are simpler than on WordPress.

### Webflow

Webflow is a hosted visual website builder that produces clean HTML and CSS without hand-coding. Designers lay out pages, add interactions and publish structured content through CMS collections; hosting and security come with the site plan. It sits between a template builder and custom code: more design control than most builders, less flexibility than code, and a platform you rent rather than own.

## How do they compare on speed, flexibility, cost, SEO and security?

Custom code wins on speed, flexibility and AI-search control; WordPress wins on editing and ecosystem; Shopify wins on selling with low maintenance; Webflow wins on design control without developers.

| Factor | Custom-coded (e.g. Next.js) | WordPress | Shopify | Webflow |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Speed | Fastest possible; ships only what each page needs | Varies widely; good with a light theme and caching, slow with heavy page builders and many plugins | Good on a lean theme; apps and third-party scripts are the usual cause of slowness | Good by default; heavy interactions and oversized images slow it down |
| Flexibility | Unlimited: any feature, integration or data model | Very high through plugins and custom code | High for commerce; fixed URL structure and checkout limits | Strong for layouts and content; limited for complex logic or app-like features |
| Editing | Developer for structure; editors use a headless CMS or data files | Block editor most teams already know | Simple admin for products, collections, pages and blog | Visual editor; editors change content, designers change layouts |
| Cost structure | Highest build cost; low hosting; pay for structural changes | Lower build cost; yearly hosting, premium plugin licences and maintenance | Monthly subscription, app subscriptions and gateway fees, plus theme or build cost | Site plan (plus workspace seats for teams), often billed in US dollars, plus build cost |
| Maintenance | Low for static sites; framework updates once or twice a year | Highest: core, theme and plugin updates, backups and monitoring | Low: Shopify maintains the platform; you manage apps and theme | Low: platform managed; you maintain content and design |
| SEO and AEO | Full control of HTML, schema, rendering and speed | Strong with Yoast or Rank Math and a clean theme | Essentials built in; fixed URL prefixes such as /products/ and /collections/; basic blog | Clean markup and editable meta; schema through custom code and CMS fields |
| Security | Smallest attack surface, especially static sites with no database | Most targeted platform; risk sits mainly in outdated plugins | Managed, with a PCI-compliant checkout | Managed by Webflow |
| Best for | Brand, B2B and SaaS sites where speed, integrations and AI visibility matter | Content-heavy and multilingual sites with in-house editors | D2C stores and any business whose main job is selling products | Design-led marketing, startup and portfolio sites edited by a small team |

Two caveats: the build matters more than the platform (a careful WordPress build beats a careless custom one), and plans, limits and features change, so check current pricing and documentation before you commit.

## Which platform suits which kind of business?

Match the platform to the site’s main job: enquiries, sales, showing work, publishing or explaining a product.

### Manufacturer, exporter or B2B company: custom-coded or WordPress

B2B buyers want specifications, certifications, catalogues and a fast way to request a quote, not a cart. A custom build handles a filterable product catalogue, downloadable datasheets, RFQ forms connected to Zoho CRM, HubSpot or a Google Sheet, WhatsApp enquiry buttons and export-market languages. Choose WordPress if marketing staff will add products and news every week; choose custom when the catalogue is large and structured, speed matters, or the site must talk to an ERP or Tally. See [website design and development](https://gaa-tha.com/services/website-development) and, for the systems behind the site, [custom software development](https://gaa-tha.com/services/custom-software-development).

### D2C brand selling products: Shopify

Shopify’s Indian checkout ecosystem (UPI, COD rules by pincode, one-click checkouts, shipping aggregators) is the most turnkey, and the team can run it without developers. Consider a headless storefront (Shopify’s Hydrogen or Next.js on the Storefront API) only when design, speed or content needs outgrow themes. Our [Shopify vs WooCommerce comparison](https://gaa-tha.com/blog/shopify-vs-woocommerce-in-india) and [Shopify development](https://gaa-tha.com/services/shopify-development) page go deeper.

### Portfolio, studio or brand website: custom-coded or Webflow

Typography, motion and image quality are the product here. Webflow or Framer suit designers who will change layouts themselves; custom code suits brands that want distinctive motion, the fastest load on mobile and full control of search markup. See our [portfolio website checklist](https://gaa-tha.com/blog/portfolio-and-brand-website-guide) and [brand website design](https://gaa-tha.com/services/portfolio-brand-website-design).

### Content publisher, media or education site: WordPress

Editorial roles, scheduling, revisions and multilingual plugins make WordPress the practical default; Ghost suits newsletter-led publishers. At high traffic, a Next.js front end on a headless CMS keeps pages fast.

### Startup or SaaS marketing site: Webflow early, Next.js as it grows

Early on, marketing changes pages weekly and Webflow lets it do so without engineers. Once the product is built in React or Next.js, the marketing site often joins the same stack so docs, changelog, pricing and integration pages can be generated from data. See [SaaS product development](https://gaa-tha.com/services/saas-product-development).

## When does Next.js with a headless CMS make sense?

A headless setup makes sense when you need the speed and flexibility of custom code but your team still has to edit content without a developer. “Headless” means the CMS only stores content; a separate front end, often built with Next.js, fetches that content and renders the pages. Next.js can pre-build pages as static HTML, render them on the server, or regenerate them when content changes, so visitors and crawlers get finished HTML.

The content source can be a headless CMS (Sanity, Contentful, Storyblok, Strapi, Payload), WordPress through its API, or Shopify through its Storefront API.

**Headless is worth it when:**

- The marketing site, web app and mobile app should share one design system and one content source.

- Many pages are generated from data: locations, product specifications, integrations, comparison or city pages.

- Core Web Vitals are a competitive advantage in paid traffic or crowded search results.

- The site must integrate deeply with an ERP, CRM, pricing engine or inventory system.

**It is not worth it when:** the site has ten pages that change twice a year (a plain static build is simpler), there is no budget for a developer on call, or the team needs page-building freedom that a structured CMS deliberately limits. Headless also means two systems to maintain. One rule applies regardless: render content on the server or at build time. A client-side-only React single-page app can hand crawlers an empty page. Our [app design and development](https://gaa-tha.com/services/app-design-development) team builds on this stack.

## Which platform is best for SEO and AI search?

No platform ranks by itself; what matters is whether every page delivers fast, complete, well-structured HTML that Google and AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity can read and quote. AI-search readiness, sometimes called AEO or GEO, comes down to six things.

1. **Content in the HTML.** Many AI crawlers fetch raw HTML and do not reliably run JavaScript, so text that appears only after client-side scripts may never be seen. Static or server-rendered pages on any of the four platforms are safe.

2. **Structured data.** Organization, Product, Service, Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and LocalBusiness schema help engines understand entities. Custom code gives full control; WordPress uses plugins; Shopify themes include Product markup and need edits for more; Webflow uses custom code embeds bound to CMS fields.

3. **Answer-first copy.** Question-shaped headings, a direct answer in the first sentence and specific facts are what AI Overviews and assistants lift.

4. **Speed.** Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP and CLS) affect rankings and whether visitors stay.

5. **Crawl controls.** An editable robots.txt (to allow or block crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended), an XML sitemap and, optionally, an llms.txt file, a proposed convention that gives AI tools a plain-text map of the site. Hosted platforms vary in whether you can place custom files at the root, so check before you choose.

6. **Entity consistency.** The same business name, address and description everywhere, linked to LinkedIn, Google Business Profile and other profiles.

Custom code makes all six easiest to get exactly right; WordPress and Webflow get close with discipline; Shopify is strong for product search but needs theme work for content-led answers. Our [SEO, AEO and GEO service](https://gaa-tha.com/services/seo-aeo-geo) and the [SEO vs AEO vs GEO guide](https://gaa-tha.com/blog-seo-aeo-geo-guide) explain the method.

## What does each platform really cost over three years?

The cheapest platform to build on is rarely the cheapest to own, so compare three-year cost of ownership: build, running costs and the cost of each change.

| Platform | Build | Running each year | Cost of change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custom-coded | Highest for the same design | Lowest: hosting often free to modest for static sites, plus domain and any CMS plan | New templates need a developer; content edits are free with a CMS |
| WordPress | Low to medium | Hosting, premium plugin and theme licences, backups, a maintenance plan | Cheap through plugins, but each plugin adds weight and risk |
| Shopify | Low on a theme, higher for a custom theme | Subscription, app subscriptions and transaction or gateway fees that grow with sales | Apps are quick to add but are recurring costs |
| Webflow | Medium | Site plan, workspace seats and add-ons such as localisation | Designers can make most changes themselves |

Typically WordPress looks cheapest in year one, Shopify app bills creep up as the store grows, and custom code costs most upfront and least to run. ## Who will maintain the site, and what happens in month six?

Maintenance capacity decides more platform choices than features do, because a site nobody can safely update starts decaying within months.

- **Editing.** Name the person who will edit the site every week and watch them try the editor before you decide.

- **Updates and security.** WordPress needs monthly core, theme and plugin updates, backups and monitoring; outdated plugins are the usual way sites get hacked. Shopify and Webflow handle the platform; static custom sites have almost nothing to patch.

- **Developer dependence.** Custom code is only as portable as its documentation. Insist on a mainstream framework, a repository in your organisation’s name and a written handover, so any competent developer can take over.

- **Lock-in.** Shopify and Webflow are rented. Products, customers and CMS items can be exported as CSV, but themes, layouts and interactions do not move. Webflow’s code export covers static pages, not CMS functionality or forms. WordPress and custom code move to any host.

- **Accounts.** On any platform, the domain, hosting, CMS, analytics and payment accounts belong in your business’s name, not the developer’s.

## How do you switch platforms without losing rankings?

You keep rankings through a migration by mapping every old URL to a new one with 301 redirects, moving content intact, and rebuilding tracking before launch.

1. **Crawl the current site** with Screaming Frog or Sitebulb and export every URL, title, description, H1 and canonical.

2. **Rank pages by value** using Search Console clicks and GA4 conversions; the top pages get line-by-line checks.

3. **Map old URLs to new ones** one-to-one and set 301 redirects: Shopify’s URL redirects, Webflow’s redirect settings, or rules at the host or CDN for custom builds.

4. **Move content intact.** Do not rewrite and replatform at once unless content is the problem.

5. **Recreate the technical layer:** structured data, canonicals, hreflang for language versions, sitemap and robots rules.

6. **Rebuild tracking** (GA4, Google Tag Manager, Meta Pixel and Conversions API, form and WhatsApp click events) and test it on staging.

7. **Launch at a quiet time**, submit the new sitemap and watch 404s and indexing daily for two weeks, then weekly for three months.

Platform-specific notes: moving from WordPress or WooCommerce to Shopify changes blog paths (Shopify places posts under /blogs/), so redirects are essential, and customer passwords do not transfer, so plan an account-activation email. Moving from Webflow to Next.js means exporting CMS collections as CSV and rebuilding templates. A short dip is normal; a lasting drop usually means missed redirects. See [Shopify migration](https://gaa-tha.com/services/shopify-migration).

## How do you make the final decision?

Answer seven questions in writing and the platform usually chooses itself.

1. What is the site’s main job: selling, generating enquiries, publishing, or showing work?

2. Who will edit it every week, and how technical are they?

3. Who will fix it when something breaks in month six?

4. What must it connect to: payment gateways, a CRM, an ERP or Tally, the WhatsApp Business API, a booking system?

5. How many languages and markets does it serve, for example English, Hindi and Gujarati, or English and French for Canada?

6. What is the three-year budget, not just the build fee?

7. How much do search and AI visibility matter compared with launch speed?

Selling with a small team points to Shopify; weekly publishing by non-technical editors to WordPress; a design team wanting control without engineers to Webflow; enquiry-led, integration-heavy or performance-critical sites to custom code, with a headless CMS where editing is needed.

gaa-tha builds custom-coded and WordPress websites and Shopify stores, so we recommend a platform after discovery, not by habit, and say so when Webflow is the better fit. ## Frequently asked questions

### Is a custom-coded website better than WordPress?

A custom-coded website is better when speed, unusual features, integrations or AI-search control matter most and you have access to a developer. WordPress is better when a non-technical team publishes often and needs plugins for forms, SEO and languages. Many businesses get the best of both with a custom front end and a headless CMS.

### Is Webflow better than WordPress for SEO?

Neither is better for SEO by default; both can rank well when built carefully. Webflow produces clean markup with less maintenance, while WordPress offers more SEO plugins and deeper control. Content quality, structure, speed and structured data decide results more than the platform.

### Can Shopify be used for a website that does not sell online?

It can, but it is rarely the right choice. Shopify’s fixed URL structure, simpler blog and monthly subscription make sense when you sell products; an enquiry-led B2B or service website is better served by custom code, WordPress or Webflow.

### Is Next.js good for SEO and AI search?

Yes, when pages are pre-rendered or server-rendered so crawlers receive complete HTML. Next.js gives full control over metadata, structured data and performance. The risk comes from building a client-side-only app where content appears only after JavaScript runs.

### Which website platform is cheapest to run in India?

A static custom-coded site is usually cheapest to run, because hosting can cost little or nothing and there is almost nothing to patch. WordPress is cheap to build but carries hosting, plugin and maintenance costs, while Shopify and Webflow charge plan fees that rise with features and usage.

### Can I switch platforms later without losing my Google rankings?

Yes, if every old URL is redirected to its new equivalent with a 301, content moves intact, and structured data and tracking are rebuilt before launch. Expect a short dip while search engines reprocess the site; a lasting drop almost always means missed redirects.
